About Bracebridge and Muskoka Municipal and District System:
Local government in Muskoka is governed by a two-tier system, an upper and lower tier.
Bracebridge Town Council (lower-tier) is comprised of nince members including:
-
Mayor (1)
-
Five Ward Councillors (5)
-
Three District Councillors (3)
One person will be voted into the Mayor position. The nominated candidates for Mayor are:
-
Rick Maloney
-
Norman Raynor
There are five wards in Bracebridge. Wards are geographical areas that Bracebridge is divided into. Each geographical area will have a specific representative called a (ward councillor). The five wards and the candidates for each ward are:
-
Bracebridge Ward: Debbie Vernon and Brian Koehn
-
Monck/Muskoka Ward: Barry Hammond who was acclaimed.
-
Macaulay Ward: Andrew Struthers and Donna Kearney.
-
Draper Ward: Laura Craig and Cindy Waters.
-
Oakley Ward: Barb McMurray who was acclaimed.
One person will be voted in to represent each one of the wards above. For a total of five ward councillors. The person who is elected as a ward councillor is responsible for issues that arise in that ward that the Town of Bracebridge handles (see roles of each level of government below).
Three people will be voted in as District Councillors for Bracebridge. This means the three elected persons will sit on both the Bracebridge Town Council and District of Muskoka Council. The person elected is then appointed to a specific District Committee - for example, I was appointed to the Engineering and Public Works Committee, and I support you with questions that are in that portfolio. My fellow District Committee councillors work with each other and respond to inquiries that pertain to their specific committee. Of course you can contact any councillor for any issue but they will loop in the councillor who is responsible for that portfolio.
The Candidates for the three District Councillor seats are:
-
Brenda Rhodes (Me, I hope to have earned your vote to be one of the 3 elected!)
-
Don Smith
-
Tatiana Southerland
-
Christian McEachran Morin
The District Municipality of Muskoka forms the upper-tier, working closely with six Area Municipalities listed below. Both levels collaborate and align services to achieve cost efficiencies and best serve residents and visitors to Muskoka.
The six Area Municipalities are:
-
Town of Bracebridge
-
Town of Gravenhurst
-
Town of Huntsville
-
Township of Georgian Bay
-
Township of Lake of Bays
-
Township of Muskoka Lakes
The District is governed by a 23 member Council consisting of a District Chair who is elected directly by District Council, the Mayors of the six Area Municipalities, and 16 directly elected District Councillors who also sit on the Area Municipal Councils (three from each, with the exception of the Townships of Lake of Bays and Georgian Bay, who have two).
